Botox Treatments for Excessive Sweating
Botox”, what’s the first thing that pops into your mind?
Maybe you envision someone getting rid of stubborn wrinkles and fine lines. Maybe you picture a smoother forehead. Hey, maybe you even imagine Hollywood celebrities with their glowing and practically flawless skin.
But did you ever picture using Botox to cure excessive sweating?
Hyperhidrosis and Botox: What You Need to Know
Excessive sweating isn’t just something that happens when you’re out in the sun for too long. When excessive sweating occurs in situations where you’re not active or hot, it’s known as hyperhidrosis. It’s not exactly known why hyperhidrosis develops; some medical experts believe it’s genetic, while others have pointed out that it can be an acquired trait developed later in life. Puberty can also exacerbate hyperhidrosis symptoms, which include:
- Excessive sweating of the underarms
- Excessive sweating of the hands and feet
- Sweating to the point where you have to constantly change your clothing
- Sweating in situations where you’re still or inactive
- Noticeable sweating
If you have hyperhidrosis, this means that your sweat glands are in overdrive and are producing too much sweat. This is why over-the-counter treatments typically don’t work for hyperhidrosis, as they’re not treating the actual cause of the excessive sweating.
That’s where Botox treatments come into play. Botox contains botulinum toxin type A, which effectively relaxes muscles at the injection site. This ingredient also works to minimize sweat gland production, as the receptor that activates these glands is similar to those that control muscle movements. Once Botox has been injected in the treatment area, it inhibits the receptor’s ability to activate the sweat glands. As a result, the client no longer experiences excessive sweating.
Botox treatments for excessive sweating typically last for up to six months. Side effects are rare, and may include pain at the injection site, irritation, flu symptoms, and back and neck pain. The FDA approved Botox for treatment of excessive sweating in the underarm area; however, many medical professionals use it to treat hands, feet, and other places with a large number of sweat glands. Your health insurance may cover some or all of the costs of your Botox treatments.
