Does a Facelift Leave Visible Scarring?

Where Will My Facelift Scars Be?
Your facelift scar placement will vary depending on the type of facelift procedure performed. However, most patients can expect their plastic surgeon to place facelift scars in the following areas:
- Behind the ears. This is the most common scar placement, as the incision allows your plastic surgeon to access key mid-facial muscles. These muscles are primarily responsible for creating the most visible facial sagging, so most plastic surgeons will focus their work here.
- Along the hairline. Another popular placement for facelift incisions is along the hairline. This allows facelift scars to be hidden from view, all while giving your plastic surgeon the ability to access and correct mid-to-upper facial muscles.
- Underneath the chin. In a few cases – usually, when a facelift is combined with a neck lift – your plastic surgeon may make a small incision underneath the chin. This incision allows your plastic surgeon to access and adjust drooping neck muscles for results that complement your facelift.

Your plastic surgeon will closely work with you to identify the best placements for your facelift incisions, as well as help you understand what to expect from post-op facelift scarring.
How Long Does It Take for Facelift Scars to Fade?
If you’re left with any visible scarring from your facelift procedure, you can expect those scars to be less visible about six months after your surgery. Usually, it takes about one year for facelift scars to completely disappear, as incisions are made into the subdermal tissue.
