How Can I Reduce Acne Scarring?
Those acne breakouts are finally gone – but unfortunately, they’ve left behind their fair share of acne scars. For many people, the acne scars can be just as bad as the breakouts, as these scars tend to leave noticeable red and purple marks, and even deep divots.
While time can heal a lot of these complexion woes, microneedling is an effective, non-invasive treatment uses a device that resembles a thick pen – however, deep within the pen is several micro-tip needles that can help accelerate cellular turnover, revealing younger, smoother, and blemish-free skin.
Additionally helpful is fractional laser therapy. Here at South Coast Plastic Surgery, we utilize the ICON laser to deliver fractional laser. There is little downtime, compared with the more ablative CO2 lasers where you may need to recover for up to 2 weeks.
So how does it work?
During your microneedling treatment, the pen will glide across the surface of your skin. This allows the tiny needles to quickly puncture the surface of the skin, which results in microscopic channels (don’t worry, they won’t be visible to the naked eye). This prompts the body’s wound-healing process, which means that you’ll suddenly produce lots and lots of collagen. As a result, you’ll shed your top layer of facial skin faster, meaning your acne scarring will start to disappear over a shorter period of time.
And if you’re worried about feeling pain or discomfort during the procedure, good news: you’ll be treated with a topical anesthesia so you’ll feel comfortable during your microneedling session.
The number of microneedling sessions you’ll need will largely depend on the age of your acne scars, their type, and their severity. However, most patients can see excellent results from a course of 3-5 microneedling treatments, each spaced about 3 weeks apart.
The ICON fractional laser is recommended with up to 5 treatment sessions. Both microneedling and the fractional laser treatments are available in package pricing customized to the individual.
