The tummy tuck surgery experience – what to expect.
If you have loose abdominal skin from aging, weight changes, or pregnancy, and it doesn’t improve with diet and exercise, a tummy tuck may be the right surgery for you to get that flat and toned tummy and mid-section. The tummy tuck surgery experience varies, so patients should be aware of what to expect, in order to properly prepare.
What is a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck is a common cosmetic operation that removes excess skin and fat and tightens separated abdominal muscles, to give patients a flattened and toned tummy.
What to expect with a tummy tuck
The incision for the tummy tuck is usually made below the underwear and bikini line, and always below a c-section scar. The scar is generally not visible with most swimsuits and undergarments, and tends to fade over time.
Patients should be prepared for the recovery from tummy tuck surgery, but the recovery time really depends on the individual. Most surgeons recommend 2 weeks away from work, and also from regular activities. However, some patients are able to resume daily activities within 7 days.
There will be some bruising and swelling after the operation. Patients can also expect to experience some pain and discomfort at the surgical site, for about 3-4 days. Oral medication is used to manage the pain. Post-operative drains are generally utilized for the first week after surgery, in order to take care of the build-up of excess fluid.
Patients are encouraged to start walking around the day following, however strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least 3 weeks.
