What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, often referred to as a "nose job," is a surgical procedure designed to reshape and enhance the appearance of the nose while addressing functional concerns such as breathing difficulties. This versatile procedure can refine the nose’s size, shape, and proportions to create facial harmony and balance while also correcting structural issues like a deviated septum or nasal asymmetry.

Nose surgery addresses a broad range of concerns, including the following:

  • A nose that is too large or prominent for the patient’s face
  • A drooping, bulbous, pinched, or upturned nasal tip
  • A bump on the nasal bridge
  • A flat or wide nasal bridge
  • Asymmetry
  • A crooked or broken nose
  • Overly wide, long, or flared nostrils
  • Poor breathing function

Types of Rhinoplasty

Dr. Ali excels at all types of nose surgeries in Orange County by focusing on nuanced adjustments that improve the relationship between the features and draw the gaze to the patient’s eyes and smile. He can perform the following variations on classic rhinoplasty:

Ethnic rhinoplasty

In the past, Caucasian beauty standards dominated the field of plastic surgery, leaving patients with non-Western features at a loss. Today, surgeons have updated their techniques to respect the unique qualities of each ethnic group. Dr. Ali is able to correct nasal imperfections while preserving your cultural and ethnic heritage.

Revision rhinoplasty

When a patient is unhappy with the results of their primary nose surgery, they can pursue a revision procedure, provided that they have waited at least a year for all residual swelling to have subsided. Dr. Ali has mastered the complex art of rhinoplasty revision and can help patients to achieve the balanced, attractive profile they originally envisioned for themselves.

Procedure Techniques

Dr. Ali performs rhinoplasty under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, allowing you to relax, rest, and sleep deeply during your procedure. Patients usually return home within a few hours after their nose surgery. Once you are unconscious, Dr. Ali will create your incisions. There are two options, and the doctor will choose the best approach based on your goals and anatomy.

Open rhinoplasty

With this option, Dr. Ali places the incision across the columella at the base of the nose (the narrow strip separating the nostrils.) This allows the doctor full, unobstructed access to the deeper structures of the nose, which can be ideal when more complex adjustments to the bone and cartilage are required. Scarring is inconspicuous and will typically only be noticeable to you and Dr. Ali.

Closed rhinoplasty

Here, Dr. Ali creates incisions within the nostrils, where scars are later unseen. This approach can provide patients with highly natural-looking changes and is recommended for situations where more subtle refinements are requested.

Recovery After Nose Surgery

Dr. Ali utilizes ERAS – Enhanced Recovery Protocol After Anesthesia and Surgery – to reduce downtime and discomfort after your rhinoplasty procedure. Your nose will be splinted for one week, which helps to stabilize its new shape and support your healing process. Swelling, bruising, and soreness usually peak during the first week and then gradually resolve over the next few weeks. Most patients can return to work or school within around 7-10 days, provided that their activities remain sedentary. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be postponed for 4-6 weeks. The nose will continue to evolve in the coming months, with minor residual swelling lasting from 6 to 12 months on average.
